Job Description
Overview
The primary purpose of the Senior Database Administrator Role is to provide the organisation with an efficient, functional and stable database environment across multiple platforms including on-prem MS Windows and Azure IaaS and PaaS. This includes diagnosis, resolution, root cause analysis of issues and identify and document problem workarounds and provide support for scheduled release upgrades and deployments. You will ensure that the Database Administration practice follows the Information and data security policies.
The secondary purpose is to provide support to the business and technology departments in the use of Link’s application systems and database tools and technologies. You will ensure service requests are appropriately actioned according to service levels and performance targets. You will provide technical support to core business application environments to ensure 24×7 availability.
You must have previous experience supporting large complex application environments in financial services industry. Experience supporting multiple large databases on SQL Server hosted on-prem and on Azure is essential. You should have the potential to understand and apply new and emerging technology in Database Services including Cloud computing, HA, DR, backup and Recovery.
Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities
Strategic Focus
- Identify, own and deliver new initiatives in the team
- Drive innovation using the new features in Oracle Database software
- Assist with the transition to cloud from a Database perspective.
- Identify, collect requirements, develop workflows to automate DBA processes
- Analyse, develop and implement process to secure, reduce downtime and optimise Database performance
Operational Management
- Provide DBA Support to Link Groups SQL Server Databases including:
- Maintaining and enhancing current procedures
- Upgrading and patching SQL Server from earlier versions
- Backup & Recovery of databases and process improvements
- Database performance assessment and optimisation
- Implement technologies related to Replication, Mirroring, Log Shipping, Availability groups, Partitioning
- Migration and data movement to Azure
- Working in the context of large (1TB+ databases) and associated performance challenges
- Supporting metadata packages (SSIS), for reporting purposes
- Assist in maintaining Data Quality and Data Integrity
- Ensure adequate capacity for database growth
- Provide recommendations on systems configuration and operational infrastructure as required by management.
- Adopt and apply best practice approaches for the operating environment.
- Ensure best value for money is obtained from third party vendors by evaluating software tools as required.
- Effective monitoring, system status alerts and escalation where appropriate.
- Perform project and system health checks.
- Raise change controls for defects as required.
- Evaluate software suitability and viability to determine its usefulness in addressing the needs of Link.
- Performance tuning of databases, queries & reports.
- Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for the database systems.
- Modifying the database structure, as necessary, from information given by application developers and the business.
- User access creation, monitoring and maintenance of system security.
- Documentation of procedures and processes.
- Implement and Review Disaster Recovery strategy
People Leadership
- Coaches and mentors team members to strengthen specific knowledge/skill within the technology area.
- Provide training to the IT support teams on supported tools and environments
- Prepare support and on call rosters for the team.
- Take over as the 2 IC for the Team Leader as and when required.
Governance & Risk
- Manage and resolve Information Security Corrective actions
- Complete the CSA on time
- Prepare and manage the SQL Database
- Develop and Maintain Documentation related to Standard Operations Procedures
- Raising security issues and breaches to Manager
- Report to Management of any issues that may impact the Business
- Monitoring service levels for Incidents and Requests and implementing improvement programs to achieve objectives.
- Maintain awareness and champion ITIL best practices
- Adhere to all Link Groups standards, policies and procedures
Experience & Personal Attributes
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science
- Over 8 Years’ experience in supporting large complex 24×7 application environments in financial services industry
- Experience in Supporting multiple Database Environments
- Experience in Supporting multiple Database on-Prem and in Azure IaaS / PaaS Environments
- Strong knowledge of SQL Server RDBMS and SQL problem solving & scripting skills is essential.
- Sound experience in Azure IaaS and PaaS solutions
- Experience in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, Analysis Services and SSIS
- Experience in managing very large data warehouse and reporting instance
- Experience in Structured programming methodology, data analysis and design skills
- Experience with High Availability and Disaster Recovery technology including new and emerging.
- High level of problem-solving skills to handle complex software and interface support issues
- Ability to work on call after hours and weekend in a rostered 24×7 environment.
- Willingness to accept responsibility and be accountable for service provided
- Sound knowledge of MS Office Products and PorwerBI
- Good documentation skills
- Effective oral and written communications skills
Preferred
- Competency across a blend of operating systems such as Windows and Linux
- Background in financial services and securities industry such as Registry, Broking, Exchange, Superannuation or Trading.
- Experience in other RDBMS streams like Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Ingress, SQL Server
- Analytical and Systematic approach to work
